About

Samuel Shelton

Samuel Shelton was born in the small town of Clifton, Texas which is a magnet for nationally recognized western artists to call home. Samuel realized early on that his love for art surpassed all other endeavors he put his hands to but also realized that love was not in painting the peaceful rural settings of the cowboy life he was accustomed to seeing day by day. He longed for the drama and intensity found in the Baroque Masters of yesteryear. Samuel is 32, a father of 5 and married to his muse. When dealing with faith, family and art he is serious to the point of a fault. Taken out of these contexts Samuel is quite a goof, terrible at small talk and a bit odd, but when dealing with painting he has found his calling. He mulls his own colors from earth pigments primarily because the thought of using modern pigments bothers him. He washes and thickens his own walnut oil, stretches his canvases, builds his own panels and frames and paints in multiple layers usually starting with a monochromatic underpainting. He loves the whole craft, not just the finished painting. He is constantly painting because he is constantly inspired. He is a storyteller at heart and moved to paint by stories filled with beauty, drama, power and light piercing the darkness. Stories of the power and grandeur of God found in forgotten hymns of the church, the exotic beauty of his wife, the knocked knees of his children or the tales of the broken who overcome are the kinds of things that inspire Samuel to paint.

He studied painting from the Academy of Art University but much of his study comes from visits to Museums and literature on the techniques and practices of the Old Masters. He currently teaches portrait classes in and around Waco, Texas and His paintings are on display at locations throughout Texas.

Artist statement

The Paintings of

My goal in painting is not to give insight into my own person through the work. I do not believe I care much if my inner whims, turmoil’s and struggles are the focus. I want to tell stories of things that are greater than me. I love painting Christian or biblically themed works that actually meet the viewer where they are in life. I never want a viewer to just see my work as something pretty to look at; I want them to leave being confronted with the beautiful, the truthful, the powerful and dramatic all wrapped up in one picture and to reflect on what the story behind the painting is about.
