Oil paintings are lovely particularly because the pigments are suspended in oil which adds a glow of life to the painting that I think is hard to mimic with other mediums. Oil adds luster, depth and beauty to paintings and this is why they have been prized as the creme de la creme of high art for the past 500 years. I wanted to paint a tribute to the glowing light of that oil painting produces and The Light Bearer is the result. I added greater depth and illumination to the light in the jar to highlight this aspect and give a sense of wonder to the viewer. From the earliest days of the Baroque period oil painters have been infatuated with light piercing out of the darkness and wanting to describe this to the public in the handling of their subjects. I am from a long line of artists who have the same infatuation.
