The Bible speaks of three forces the Christian wars against on a daily basis; the world, the flesh and the devil. The world is understood as the conglomeration of beliefs and practices that are starkly against God. This world system is represented by the figure reading from the book. He is shouting ideas about what is important, where we came from, where we are going, what morality is, what is ethical, etc. The flesh is represented by the seductress. Flesh in the bible has many faces but in sum, it represents both the physical and emotional lusts that we indulge as we rebel against God. The Devil is represented by the man with the scroll. In scripture, Satan has many functions but one peculiar one is to accuse the saints before God. The man seated at the table is the Christian. But hope is not far away, there is light streaming in from all over and an open door just waiting for him.
